He called for more support for Ukraine.
In a speech before the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, President Joe Biden defined the conflict in Ukraine as a duel between democracy and autocracy. He also issued a strong rebuke of Russia’s President Putin.
Earlier Wednesday, President Putin ordered a partial mobilization of reservists in Russia and raised the specter of using nuclear weapons after his troops retreated in the northeastern region of Ukraine.
“Let us speak plainly, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council invaded its neighbor, attempted to erase the sovereign state from the map,” President Biden said. “Russia has shamelessly violated the core tenants of the United Nations charter.”
“Just today, President Putin has made overt nuclear threats against Europe and reckless disregard of the responsibilities of a nonproliferation regime,” President Biden continued.
The U.S. president also announced a commitment of $2.9 billion in global food aid, an effort to address growing famine in the Horn of Africa, rising food prices worldwide due to the war in Ukraine, and inflation.
